The Best Games for a Grown-Up Game Night

We Love Game Nights

Ryan and I both love a good game night. We have game nights with friends often, and even bring games with us to play with our family when we go back to Georgia. Games are a great way to let out our competitive side and have a good time with friends! Our favorite type of games are loud, fast-paced, and call for either a lot of laughs or some drama. We’ve tried out many games through the years. Here are our current favorites!

1. Secret Hitler

A game of excitement, drama, strategy, and well, lying

In Secret Hitler, players are immersed into Germany during the 1930’s. Each individual is randomly assigned the role of either a liberal or a fascist. One lucky (or unlucky) individual at the table is the fascist party leader- Hitler. During the “night” period at the beginning of the game, the minority party, the fascists, learn who their teammates and Hitler are. During this phase of the game, the liberals and Hitler must keep their eyes closed. They “wake up” unaware who anyone else at the table is. Then, the game begins.

The gameplay is fast-paced and intense as teammates elect new leaders each turn and lay down fascist and liberal cards. Teams race to the finish with arguments and accusations along the way. This game is loud, super entertaining, and a great way to keep game night exciting for hours on end. Trust issues and frustrations are sure to result, but the game is truly addictive- especially when your team wins. The game takes a couple rounds to get the hang of, but once you do, you’re sure to be playing all night long. We highly recommend Secret Hitler.

Game Info: Players: 5-10 Ages: 13+ Play Time: 45 minutes (usually 20-30)

2. Exploding Kittens

Exploding Kittens is fun, fast-paced, strategic, and cut-throat

I’ll be honest, when we first saw this game, we thought it was going to be strange and kinda stupid. Then, we started playing, and we were hooked.

This game is fun because it’s all about screwing people over to make sure they explode, and you don’t. Strategy is involved as you must use each of your cards with various advantages to stay alive, and most of these cards are played with an expense to your opponents.

This game is shorter than Secret Hitler and quicker to learn. It also offers a grand bit of excitement, laughs, and frustrations. Definitely a must-have!

We also have the Imploding Kittens expansion pack. This pack is really great to keep the game exciting after playing way too many times, and even includes a “cone of shame” for anyone who asks whose turn it is.

Game Info: Players: 2-5 Ages: 7+ Play Time: 15 minutes

3. Cards Against Humanity

Offensive, inappropriate, hilarious, and entertaining

This is a classic party game because it’s funny and ridiculous. The gameplay is simple. Players take turns being the “reader” and reading a black card. Then, players respond by placing down their funniest white card. The winner keeps their white card to represent their victory. The first player to 5 white cards wins. There are also many expansion packs to keep the game new and unpredictable, even after playing hundreds of times.

Cards Against Humanity is simple, inappropriate, and fun. Definitely not a game to play with kids- or your parents, but a good time with the right audience.

Game Info: Players: 4-30 Ages: 17+ Game Time: 30 minutes

4. Smart Ass

A fast-paced, fun, & competitive trivia game. A little bit of luck may be necessary to win.

Smart ass is a super fun, fast-paced trivia game, and is a more exciting alternative to Trivial Pursuit. In the game, players compete with one another to answer trivia questions first. But they must answer correctly, or they are out for that turn. The trivia questions are divided into 3 categories, Where am I? What am I? Who am I?

The winner then rolls the dice to advance on the board- but has to be careful not to land on the dumbass spaces! It is a race to the donkeys… butt hole. May the smartest ass win!

PS There’s also a card game version of this game that looks just as fun but, we’ve never played! Here’s a link to check it out. Smart Ass Card Game
